White Cell City

Original: Private Collection, NYC

Size: 6 3/4″ x 7″ W

Giclee of drawing: Colored pencils & felt tip, printed on Hahnemuhle rag stock

About this drawing: I saw an old magazine article about AIDS clusters in the New York City area. There was also a torn scrap of a map of downtown Manhattan with the streets were lettered with a red the color of dried blood. It marked where my neighbors & my friends were being hollowed out as their white blood cell count climbed. It was jarring to see something so horrific reduced to an impersonal, hard-edged grid.
